Renting a Place in Korea as a Foreigner

Estimated time: 90 min read

Foreigners can rent in Korea through monthly rent (월세, wolse) or lump-sum deposit (전세, jeonse) contracts. Monthly rent is more accessible for short-to-medium term stays. Contracts are typically written in Korean — have a trusted person review the contract before signing. Register your residence (전입신고) at the local Dong office within 14 days of moving in. For monthly rent, typical deposits range from KRW 1–5 million with monthly rent of KRW 400,000–1,200,000 depending on location and size. Goshiwon (고시원) and share houses are lower-cost options popular with students. A real estate agent (공인중개사) can assist with finding and reviewing listings.
