Opening a Korean Bank Account as a Foreigner

Estimated time: 60 min read

Most major Korean banks (KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Woori, Hana, IBK) allow foreigners to open accounts with an ARC, passport, and a Korean mobile number. If you do not yet have an ARC, some branches may open a limited account with a passport alone, though conditions vary by branch. Foreign residents without an ARC can also use KakaoBank or Toss for a basic digital account. Visit the bank in person; online-only signup is generally not available for first-time foreign applicants. Bring all documents in originals.
